Advanced Strategic Combat - Improving Coordination
When you are coordinating an assault towards another alliance or faction (in case of war) and you expect a lot of resistance, there are a good many ways to improve on your performance as a team. The following is a list of useful suggestions:
1. Communications:
Arrange for either TeamSpeak or another Voice Communications (perhaps Skype) to be installed and ready on all participants. Communication is absolutely vital for a good operation.
At the very least, make up a www.chatzy.com free chat room. It is inferior to voice communications but better than nothing.
2. Move as a group:
Make sure that you have plans for what happens in case someone steps on a timebomb, falls into an ambush (have homeworld set close) or finds an online enemy ship. When you have instant communications, it is a small matter to simultaneously attack an enemy in dogfight.
3. Know your target:
Don't move around without a plan. Have a plan from the beginning as well as a backup. make sure you have a safe retreat where you can meet up and especially where traders can wait and transfer bots or drugs for you when needed.
4. Dual-window Ambushing:
When you know where you are going to set an ambush, first go to an unused tile and right-click the "Ambush" button. Choose "open in new screen/tab" depending on your preference. Now you can make sure the QL you are using works AND you can enter the QL so that when you want to set an ambush, you only need to press the "Set Ambush" button.
Now, return to the old window and MOVE your ship. This does not change the contents of your former window. Now you can move to the tile you want to set ambush on, and immediately set the ambush by pressing the "Set ambush" button in the other open window (instead of wasting valuable seconds struggling with a QL while enemy fighters zip around you).
Even more secure ambushing with Message Notifier
Get yourself a message Notifier, and open a new tab of either http://orion.pardus.at or http://artemis.pardus.at every 10 seconds, until you have 6 tabs open. As the message/combat window just refreshes every 60 seconds, you're having 6 of them -> update every 10 seconds.
If you are really paranoid, you can open 12 tabs (every 5 seconds).
Quicker Dogfighting
Firefox required. Install a Greasemonkey script from www.conglomo.org, then you'll see a few quickbuttons under each pilot (Msg, Trade, Attack).
